So far from the Bamboo Grove:: Final Post
2.I think they keep their traditions because thats all they have left pretty much from the past. I also think that they keep them because its not like theyve changed their religion their going to keep what they do.And they dont have much now so they try to do as much as they can to keep their religion and race through all the drama and tragedy over the time. They also lost so much over the time and the most they can do is celebrate with the little they have.
3.I admire and respect Ko the most. She has been strong and willing through out the whole time. Since the train, the walk, the accident, the boat ride, the death of her mom, and living in a warehouse. Shes done so much like quitting school to go straight to work because she needs to keep Yoko safe. I think if they did the travel without Ko they wouldnt of made it. Ko put all her work into things. Lead the way.And was demanding to make them listen. Sometimes mean things might slip her mouth. But imagine if you were in that position and didnt know excatly which way to go and how to get there. You dont know whats going to happen next. Or when your going to get there. Thats stress and through all of that shes been able to keep it real. Shes also very smart. Like how she didnt use Mothers money at first and only to use it for saftey reasons. And to learn to do amazing things. Like sew white silk with colored string and not see the string colors at all. I think that shes giving and caring. And i respect what she did and how she did it. God bless you Ko.
4.Ive learned so much from this novel. Like how they killed people that didnt just want tobe communist. Which is really sad. Another thing i learned is that they had a border pretty much of south Korea and North Korea and its rare when you pass (by swimming) and is alive. I learned that the Japanese or koreans lost the war. I cant really remember. Ive learned that the Koreans didnt play they would kill hard. And wouldnt settle for less!. I think that i also learned that some people can be cold hearted and others will open their arms up to help.
5.You could learn about the bombs. They would drop them, not caring who it killed, or how people would now because their bodies dissinagrated. You could also learn how people could be so mean without caring. For example the girls at the school treat Yoko with no respect at all. But i bet if someone talked to them of they thought about it for a while they would notice that its just plain wrong. You could also learn that sometimes it takes something bad to happen to learn something.Like when Yoko's mom died they learned how to do things on their own.Actually since they had to flee they started learning how to take care of things on their own. You learn so much from this novel that its amazing.

op #4
1.Yoko wants to help Mr.Naido because he didnt get into the war because of his speech disorder. And got lucky to get into that school. Mr Naido wants to help Yoko because he knows what she goes through and trys to help as much as he can. They both were rejected by something. Yoko ko and their deceased mother came because they were rejected by the Korean people. Naido was rejected from the Japense war.
2.Yoko notices but doesnt tell Ko that her idea is to shine shoes for extra money. And see that she does her best to help out her and Yoko . Yoko changes from that because she realizes that her sister is doing something to help. And might just get more money than Yoko herself.
3.Do you think that Mr.Corpal Matsumara will be helpful to the Kawishima family? Why?
My answer: I think yes because he knows what they went through. He knows their alive. And he has his life going on track kinda. Other than he has a baby on the way. Hes all good and maybe will help. Because as far as we know hes a good guy.

OP#3 So far from the Bamboo Grove
a.They felt that they needed to because it was getting to far with the koreans against the japanese. One day when they were washing their clothes Japenese girls were being raped by Korean men. Which is only one sign for them not to stay any longer than they should. I think i would leave to.
b. I disagree on leaving Hideyo because he thinks that their meeting in Seoul and their meeting in Pusan which means that he would be going somewhere that wasnt needed. And he would haft to travel that far to meet no one.
2.They live on garabage and unsanitary products for the moment. I think that its hard for them because Hideyo is going the wrong way. They were forced to leave their homes. They have dirty clothes and are at risk any moment of their life. They dont know excatly what too do yet.
3. How do you think that Hideyo will know their not going to Seoul anymore? Do you he will ever know?

OP #2 [ So far from the Bamboo Grove ]
2.Food. ( Ceral, Fruit snacks, Dry mango slices, Chips) I said food because i would need to eat to stay alive if i ever made it.
Drinks ( Welch's, Orange, Apple,Water) I said water because dehyderation could kill you.
Clothing ( 2 jackets, 3 shirts, 2 pants) I would say clothes because something might come up where i need to change my clothes so they dont get suspicious.
Blankets. I say blankets because i wouldnt be sleeping in my home so i would need something to keep me warm.
3. I think the most upsetting part was when Hiydeo and the others had to throw bodies down the hills. Because its so sad that they would do that. And how they would gather them. But i respect the fact that he rolled down the women and children bodies lightly.

OP #1
2.Ko thinks that Yoko is a little spoiled brat sometimes who doesnt care for others feelings. But she takes on the role of being a big sister and does her duty as that. I think that Yoko thinks that shes bossy because she demands orders , but sometimes Yoko relizes that its for their own good.
3.I think Yoko thought that its kind-of scary and that their all different and not the same as her, and are wounded so she caters to them with food and water for supply. I think the mom tries to ingore some of the things the people on the frieght train do but she is still a very caring women to them all. I think Ko is the most supportive to the wounded, because she helped some and shared a blanket with one without having her mom to ask. I think Ko noticed the state their in at the moment and chose to help them out.

final wave post :]
I believe in 3rd grade me and my friend Deja werent talking because i didnt want to do something she told me so she started a group called the anti-kezia club. before people knew the name or the fact you had to ignore me deja had struggled them in. Well i was soon alone so i told our subsitute teacher becuase our orginal teacher was on pregnancy leave. and soon enough she solved the whole sharrad and it was all over. But it wouldnt if i didnt tell someone or let it come through me and my friends who joined friend ships. I wouldnt of have ever gotten my friendship back with deja.
2. Hmm , Robert i would describe him soft on the inside. And that means hes nice , maybe to nice. At the begging of the wave Robert was the class nerd, no one would sit by him at lunch and if he sat by them, they take their trays and go to a new table. When the wave started , everyone in the wave sat by each other including him. When the wve contuied he was obsesssed on that fact and even offered to be Mr. ross's body gaurd. I think the wave changed him that way is because the first day of it. They let him sit at their table, it probably made him feel like somebody. I only think it changed him because he got attention, people noticed him, talked to him, he had friends. But before he was alone and people just ignored him and tried to stay their distance. Im hoping he gets actual friends. Infact thats a good question because i was wondering bout' that too. I think Mr.ross might help his reputation a little. But i think people wont go back to treating him wrong because people got to actually see Robert during the Wave and im geussing some people thought he was pretty cool.
3.Fascism: a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.
a- One example is the Wave period. Because one boy got beat up and then the other boy yelled out the Wave motto and called the boy a ''dirty jew.''And thats just wrong. It showed the Fascism in the Wave
b- well there was the knottsies and that was on the germans i believe. And they took them and if they werent ''working material'' they were killed and their bodies burned after. It showed fascism because they treated them wrong because of their race. Its like me not having white friends because i think their stuck up and annoying <- which i dont. Its mean and cruel theirs no point to it. Like an old saying '' treat someone the way you would like to be treated''
4.The first thing to keep myself from the mob would to find a false on the mob. Like why i dont agree with it. I think that if theres a mob theirs going to people who dont wanna follow the crowd , i would join that crowd so i dont feel alone. I think i would try to do my best to stop the mob. But i think the main thing i would do was try to get otheres to relize what im realizing because i see another half to the whole mob mentatily. I dont really like to be in mobs or follow only one group of people so that would be an excellent reason to not join the mob. Because no ones the same everyone has differences :] I think for advice i would tell people to think hard about the faults on the mob and if their worth fighting over. If so you could inform other people before it goes to far, or if its already to far you can tell a princable of the ''RULER'' of the so called mob. So they can come to their senses and end the whole sharad as soon as possible.

Fhp Reflection
Name: Kezia 10.18.07
Project Reflection
Project Title: Family History Project ( Watts Riot)
Class: Humanities Dates: September through October Due: 10.17.07
PURPOSE
In this section, explain what you were supposed to learn and what you were supposed to do.
Sentence Starters The purpose of this project was to learn about… In order to learn about _________________, we had to create/perform/ write/etc…
The purpose of this project was to learn about a historical moment that you weren't able to witness. On the facts that you weren't born yet or weren't in that city at the time. Another Purpose was to learn how to be a historian and learn how to research information about things most likely you have no idea what happened. In order to learn about our historical events we had to perform, questions, interviews, and how to research to be a good historian for this project.
WHAT I LEARNED
In this section, tell what information or skills you learned or improved.
Sentence Starters I learned about… I explored the concept of … In this project, I learned how to…. (skills)
During this project i learn about a historical moment, for me the Watts riot. I explored the concept of the Watts riot. Why it started, who started it, and when it occurred. Most importantly before i learned about the Watts riot. I had to learn how to be a good historian:
Asking good questions for the interview
Writing a narrative ( historical and personal )
Scrap booking it all
Gathering only the important information
I know that all sounds like it's just basic steps for a project. But in order to do our project Ms. Interlandi taught us all how to work in those specific places. Going back to what i learned about the watts riot is:
It started in 1965 and lasted for 6 days
It occurred in many places not just Los angles.
And that was pretty much it. But i think i learned a lot from this project.
REFLECTION
In this section, reflect on your experience. Did you like the project? Why or why not? How did you do? What would you do differently next time?
Sentence Starters I enjoyed this project because… I feel like I could have done better on this project because… Next time, I would…
I enjoyed this project because it was actually pretty fun and i got to interview my grandma which is something i don't really do. I also liked this project because i thought i learned a lot from it. I don't think i would actually know about the watts riot unless i did this project, or maybe even cared much about it. I feel i could of done better on my interview because my questions somehow some flowed in with each other. Also i lagged after i made my new interview questions to have the interview. Next time i will try to keep in touch better and make sure i make an official Interview date. I also think that i could of gotten more pictures of all of my family, but i really cant blame myself for that because some of my family like my grandma's twin and her other sister like to hog the pictures and don't trust other people with them. Continuing on how i could do better with the pictures is to remember to remind people things because older people have a habit to forget like my grandma did when she came over my house the weekend before the project was due to bring some old family pictures. But luckily i had found some around the house that was either framed, scrap booked, or sitting in a box under my moms bed. I really liked this project and I'm glad Ms. Interlandi did this project
ARTIFACTS
You should have at least one artifact from each project on your DP. What document, picture, or link will you have for this project?
For my Dp i plan to have my narratives and hopefully get some pictures scanned to put on my dp when i send them to myself. I also plan to put my interview questions for people to veiw on my dp. Lastly I'm going to put the link to wikipedia where i got most of my information.

The wave post4
2.A sentence that jumped put to me was:''You know'',he said, ''Your just against this thing because your not special anymore.Because your not the bestand the most popular student in the class now.'' That sentence jumped out to me because it showed me that the wave was reflected on how people treated their loved ones. How he just turned on her because she didnt want to go that way.
3. Do you think that the wave is brain washing other people to not hang out with the non-waves.Or do you think Brian just had that problem?Explain.

The Wave .Post 3
2. My favorite sentence was:'' If robert couldnt function in school before the wave, he wont be able to function outside the school where the wave doesnt exist.'' This sentence JUMPED out to me because it made me think. Could it be true.Maybe the wave only could change you for that period of time. Then without the wave your back too your bad habits.Or maybe you learned so well you will keep the good manners and grow with it.
3.My qeustion i has is: Do you think Lauries mom is getting to serious about The Wave. Or do you think its perfectly normal for that reaction? Explain.

The wave Post 2
2. The sentence that jumped out to me was: ''If she argued aganist The wave, she be implying that robert should go sit by himself again and not be apart of their community.'' This sentence jumped out to me because it showed that even with the lessons. So people like laurie didnt understand the meaning of the Wave. How it was a community ,like they saod not a popularity contest.I think it also meant if it didnt mean that. That it meant that she's getting used to follow and agree with the rules of the Wave. And keep un nesscary comments out
3. Do you think it was a good idea that robert got invovled? Explain. Why or why not.

The Wave
The book occurs in 1969. In a history high school class. The setting is in Palo ALto California.
b. List at least three things the author describes that gave clues it was written during that time period, rather than today! Look for what is different than our school and others you know.
One thing is that they can wonder through the classrooms durning lunch time. Another is they use vcr's to watch historical moments. Plus their chairs were singly seated like you would see in the Balboa Park school.Lastly the lunch cort was inside, not outside.
2.A sentence that jumped out to me was: ''Robert's case was tough: the younger brother wallowing in the shadow of an older brother who had been the quintessentual model student and a big man on campus.'' It JUMPED out to me becuase, alot people have that problem. It kind-of made me sad because he could suceed in so much more. But he chooses not to because hes probably sick of being prefferd to hey thats jeff's little brother. But it jumped out to be also because how his brother is doing so good but he isnt.
3. Why do you think its so odd that Robert turned out so much different this his older brother Jeff?

''Seventh grade'' Questions And Answers

1. Choose a favorite sentence or two from the story. Explain why it moved you so much as well. (2-3 sentences for explanation)
''Teresa'' Victor said automatically.
I liked this sentence because it totally gave away that he has a big crush on teresa. i dont even blame the girls for laughing. Victor gave away so much about him only on the first day.
2. Find a part of the story you really connected with, and explain why! (3-5 sentences)
He was going too like 7th grade. I liked the sentence because it was like my first day. But im a she, my first day was awesome just like his. I could connect because my first day of school was amazing even though im not in my friends class. It rocked

''Test'' Questions and Answers

1. Choose a sentence that really stood out to you, or appealed to your senses. Copy the sentence exactly, and explain in 3 sentences or less WHY it was so moving for you. (DO NOT say "because it's descriptive;" rather, explain how it made you feel!)
'' We put you through hypnosis- do it to everybody theses days before they can get their drivers licenses. Makes better drivers of them, more careful drivers the rest of their lives.''
The reason i like this sentence was ''moving for me is because it made me think. is he really in a dream. What kind-of world do we live in and how weird that test was.
2. In your opinion, is the method (hypnosis) used in "Test" an appropriate way for the government to see if young drivers are ready for the road? Why or why not? (3-5 sentence response.)
Uh.I think not really because its kind-of scary. Plus if you say yes they send you too crazy camp. I think no totally they shouldnt .Driving test's werent meant to scare people. But too use for their advantage to go places
3. How could you interpret the statement by the uniformed man in the last paragraph: "How do any of us know?" Share your thoughts on this odd, ironic ending! (3-5 sentences)
I think that its kind of weird. In fact i was mad how they ended it like that. I think that it might be a dream because it kind of makes no sense. I hate the fact that that i need too guess but i believe it was kinda weird.

favorite book from 2006

my favorite book from 20O6 was ''al copone does my shirts''
by Gennifer Choldenko. This book was about a boy named moose flannagan, his sister natalie who had autism. you should read this book because its no where near boring and if you dont believe me read this summary that Norah Piehl said.
AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS
by Gennifer Choldenko
G.P. Putnam's Sons
ISBN: 0399238611
Ages 8-12
240 pages
![]() |
Twelve-year-old Moose Flannagan doesn't know how to feel about his new home. Sure, it's neat to live right in San Francisco Bay, but the neighbors leave something to be desired. You see, Moose and his family live on Alcatraz Island, where Moose's father has a new job as electrician and prison guard. At school on the mainland, Moose is a bit of a misfit. Not only do the other guys think living on Alcatraz is a little weird, they also don't understand why Moose can't stay after school to play baseball.
Instead, Moose has to head home to watch his sister Natalie. Natalie has autism, a condition that had not even been identified in 1935, when this novel is set. No one is quite sure how to deal with Natalie. Most "experts" tell the Flannagans to put her in an institution, but the family would rather try a variety of experimental therapies, which yield mostly disappointing results. Moose is the only one who can really reach Natalie, and he constantly clashes with his mother about the best way to work with her.
Moose and Natalie discover a new kind of community among the several families who live on Alcatraz Island, including bossy seven-year-old Theresa and the warden's manipulative, sneaky (but also kind of cute) daughter Piper. In the end, the kids cooperate --- with a little help from Al Capone himself --- to find a place where Natalie can finally belong.
Believe it or not, this novel's unusual setting is based on fact --- the families of Alcatraz prison guards actually did live on the island. The author includes a helpful note explaining the historical facts behind the story, as well as a brief note about autism.
What really makes this a winning novel, though, is not the setting but its main character. Moose, who narrates the story, is responsible and trustworthy in spite of himself. The love he feels for his sister despite the frustrations she causes him shines through all his words. The relationships among Moose, his hardworking father and his well-meaning mother are also rich and dynamic. Even without its connection to the famous mobster, AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS would still be a real hit.
